I always love seeing the ''prison'' scene in Cabin in the Woods, the fact that the people behind that movie put SCP 173 in it just shows the respect they have for horror that they'd feel a semi-unknown monster would fit well in their scene.

They pretty much did all the effects for thing 2011 practically but the studio basicly told them to paint them over with cgi.. You can see plenty of models and puppets in the behind the scenes.. (the movie itself was never gonna be a classic but it could have looked a million times better)

The SPFX of The Thing (1982) can STILL hold up today almost 40 years later and is better than a majority of SPFX in movies in the past 5 years.

Honestly both The Thing movies are equal to me. They are both done so well and the first one that was made looked so practical and great, and the CGI one has such great effects done to it. The blood and the creature itself looked great so both in my opinion

I fucking love practical effects but there is definitely a time and place for cgi. And some things are just better with cgi without a doubt, but stuff like explosions i personally think is almost always better when they're done for real

Fun fact about Blair witch: There’s a scene when they’re running away and she screams “What is that?!”, the camera man forgot to pan to the actor chasing them to their left and they just never redid it.

Dude I’ve been playing Extraction point, passed the point where Alma kills the Replicas in the train tunnel, and I never caught that F.E.A.R reference in “Cabin in the Woods”. Mind is blown.

I must admit when I first saw the defibrillator scene on LTsection without any context I burst into laughter how silly and fake it look. After some research I started to appreciate that scene, film and practical effects in that film but it still looks fake to me. I like when the monster looks real and it can be done full practically, full CGI or mixed I don't care. For example practical xenomorph from Alien 1979 looks great, but CGI xenomorphs from Alien:Covenant also looks amazing (although it is one of my least favourite Alien movies), while some practical effects from Alien 3 look like very cheap CGI and I mean very cheap.

When will Corridor actually work on a feature film and let other VFX artists react? Lol

The Thing "remake" was a Prequal. If it wasn't said already. ;-) But Itotally agree some or more practical effects would have sold it even more! But being an 80s kid. I still like both!

the problem is when CG is at its best you dont notice it so when you're thinking about CGI most people are thinking about when you remember it or have noticed it... which is usually the bad times

Practical effects aren't automatically better than CG but it is way easier to get right because there are an almost infinite number of variables to take into account and with CG you have to do that all yourself which is insane! The physical nature of practical effects helps so much more than most people will even notice at the time.

Well... something happened to my original comment... I am not sure what... it just kinda disappeared on me... I probably hit enter on accident... Did you ever notice that The Thing from 2011 doesn't only have many nods to the 82 film but is actually a prequel. If you watch the ending scene to the 2011 film, it mirrors the opening scene to the 81 film. Not to mention if you watch the 82 film you realize that the dog comes from a Norwegian base. The 2011 film takes place in a Norwegian base. This helps explain why there are different characters, and the different size in the alien ship. If you pay close attention to the 82 film, the ship he destroys is a collection of scrap parts the alien is trying to use to build an escape ship. I didn't care for the 2011 film as much as the original, it looked too fake for a movie made with obviously tons of money thrown into the effects. But once I seen the closing scene and the dog being chased by the helicopter, it clicked. I still didn't love it as much as the John Carpenter film, but I did respect the changes in the story a lot more, since they weren't actually changes. The fact they could keep that one detail so close to the original, tied them together and made it worth it.

If they made the girl break her foot (In movie) then they could have made her wear shorts and just attach the strings to a cast on her foot and pull her that way just saying yknow

John carpenters one is tons better

John Carpenter's Thing will always be the best. Those puppets and effects still freak me out. When I saw the new version I didn't have the same visceral reaction. Now, if I'd never seen the 80s movie? Maybe the effects of the new one would have worked better for me.

The 2011 Thing is a prequel not a remake like everyone says it is.
