I agree with you Despicable Me is good but I think Megamind is better. But dude Illumination Entertainment still does try on their other movies but sometimes not enough. They don't take risks with their animation and play it safe.

Funny how I got a pretty similar take on Megamind being a under-appreciated movie that gains up a bit of ground as time goes as I feel the same way about Tim Burton's Corpse Bride. A movie with its flaws and simplistic presentation, but also quite a bit of hidden depths and that good ol' Burton dark spices. As a matter of fact, there was something so strangely enticing with Corpse Bride that I had to watch it 14 times in 2 weeks. First, it was a rented DVD which I ended up watching 8 times in 2 days. Then I watched it again 6 times in 12 days. There was something enticing about the movie and even if there were a couple of parts that I didn't even like, some other parts were like a brain-stimulating drug that, even up to today, I have rarely ever felt. To give an idea, the last movie that gave me this kind of brain-stimulating effect was the Japanese anime movie A Silent Voice. When the displayed emotion feels real and the music score feels perfect and the slight amount of seriousness and/or humour and/or sadness act as the perfect glue for the story. It's a rare feat. By the way, yes I got the soundtrack of both of those movies and, yup, the brain-stimulating feeling, while weaker, does happens when I listen to those.

This isn't the only under-recognised movie due to being similar to one that came out before it. Another example is The Sixth Sense vs Stir of Echoes, which came out shortly after. Stir of Echoes was much, much better. It just had the misfortune of coming out last.

One very wise thing Megamind teaches us is that the totally humanoid alien (Superman-style) isn't alien enough for some chicks. Pointed ears is their barely-fuckable, blue skin + superintelligence + a huge head is a decent catch, but what they really want is tentacle monster or better. Xenomorph eggs and Lovecraft creatures are what it takes to make them scream.
